Frequently Asked
Questions

Answers to the most common questions from parents. If you do not see yours here, our support team is happy to help.

General

WonderSpell is a spelling test app where parents are in control. You create the tests, manage your learners' profiles, and start each session. Then you hand the device to your student. They hear each word spoken aloud, type their answer, and get friendly encouragement from our mascot, Jimmy. The app is designed for learners of all ages, with themes for younger and older students.

WonderSpell is built for learners of all ages. The app features two visual themes: a playful mascot theme for younger students and an explorer adventure theme for older students. Parents control all test content, so the difficulty naturally adapts to each student's level.

No. Students never create accounts and never provide any personal information. Parents sign in with their Apple ID and manage learner profiles within their own account. When it's time for a spelling test, the parent starts a practice session and hands the device to their student. The student interacts only with the test-taking screen.

Each WonderSpell subscription supports up to 5 learner profiles. Each learner has their own progress tracking, test history, and word mastery analytics, all managed from a single parent account.

AI & Content Generation

Yes, WonderSpell uses AI in three specific, limited ways:

  • Audio pronunciation: A self-hosted text-to-speech engine generates clear, natural audio for every spelling word.
  • Example sentences: AI generates age-appropriate sentences that show each word in context, helping learners understand meaning and usage.
  • Image-to-words extraction: Parents can snap a photo of a spelling list and AI extracts the words automatically. Images are processed entirely on our own servers and deleted after processing.

All AI processing runs on our own infrastructure. No data is sent to third-party AI services, and AI is never used for advertising, behavioral profiling, or data mining.

We use a self-hosted text-to-speech engine called Kokoro that runs entirely on our own servers. When a parent adds a word to a spelling test, Kokoro generates a clear, natural-sounding audio file. That audio is stored securely on our servers and streamed to the app during tests. No audio data passes through external services.

When a new word is added, our system uses AI to generate an age-appropriate example sentence that demonstrates the word in a natural context. For instance, for the word "brilliant," the system might generate: "The sun was so brilliant that we needed sunglasses." These sentences are generated on our own servers and are designed to be educational, neutral, and appropriate for young learners.

While we work hard to ensure all generated content is age-appropriate, AI systems are not perfect. If you encounter a sentence, pronunciation, or any content that seems inappropriate, confusing, or incorrect, please report it immediately:

Please include the word and the specific content you found concerning. We review every report and will correct the issue promptly.

Subscriptions & Pricing

WonderSpell offers an affordable monthly subscription. A free trial period is available so you can explore the full app and decide if it's right for your family before any charges apply. Current pricing is displayed in the App Store and within the app.

A subscription means we work for you, not for advertisers. Here is what that looks like in practice:

  • No advertisements, ever. Your student's learning environment stays focused and distraction-free.
  • No data selling. We never sell, share, or monetize your family's information.
  • Continuous improvement. Your subscription funds ongoing development of new features, content, and security updates.
  • Real infrastructure, no shortcuts. We run our own servers for audio generation, sentence creation, and encrypted data storage. Your subscription funds a service that does not cut corners on your family's privacy or experience.

Subscriptions are managed entirely through Apple's App Store. After downloading WonderSpell, you'll be prompted to start your free trial. When the trial ends, your subscription renews automatically through your Apple ID. You can view, change, or cancel your subscription at any time in your device's Settings under Subscriptions.

You can cancel your WonderSpell subscription at any time through your Apple ID settings:

  1. Open Settings on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap your name at the top, then Subscriptions.
  3. Find WonderSpell and tap Cancel Subscription.

Your access continues through the end of the current billing period. No partial refunds are issued by Apple for the remainder of a billing cycle.

No. WonderSpell will never show advertisements. We believe learners deserve a focused, distraction-free learning environment. Our subscription model exists specifically so we never have to rely on advertising revenue or attention-harvesting practices.

Privacy & Security

Yes. We take data security seriously. All personal data, including names, email addresses, and account details, is encrypted at rest in our database using industry-standard encryption. All communication between the app and our servers is encrypted in transit using TLS. We never sell, share, or provide your data to any third-party marketing, analytics, or advertising services. For full details, please read our Privacy Policy.

Absolutely not. WonderSpell does not sell, rent, trade, or share your personal information with any third party for marketing, advertising, or analytics purposes. Your data is used solely to provide and improve the WonderSpell service for your family. This is a core principle of our business, not just a policy.

WonderSpell collects only what is necessary to provide the service:

  • Parent account: Name and email address, provided securely through Sign in with Apple. No password is stored.
  • Learner profiles: First name and age only. No email, no password, no personally identifying information beyond a first name.
  • Usage data: Test scores, word mastery progress, and session history, used solely to power analytics and improve the learning experience.

All of this data is encrypted at rest and in transit. We do not collect location data, device identifiers for advertising, or any data beyond what is listed above.

Using the App

Creating a test is simple. In the parent dashboard, tap "Create Test," give it a name, select a learner, and add your words. You can type words one at a time or add them in bulk. The app automatically generates audio pronunciations and example sentences for each word. Once all audio is ready (usually within seconds), the test is available for your student to take.

Practice mode is a dedicated test-taking interface. When a parent starts a test session, the app switches to a learner-friendly screen with large text, audio playback controls, a typing area, and our mascot Jimmy for encouragement. Students interact only with the test and cannot access account settings, other profiles, or any parent-facing features.

WonderSpell tracks each learner's performance on a per-word basis using a weighted moving average. Over time, the app identifies which words your student has mastered and which ones need more practice. Parents can view detailed analytics showing strong words, weak words, test scores over time, and overall mastery progress. The app can also automatically generate practice tests focused on words that need the most work.

WonderSpell is available for iPhone and iPad running iOS 17.0 or later. The app is optimized for both screen sizes, with the iPad version offering a particularly comfortable test-taking experience for learners of all ages.

During a test, students can request hints such as hearing the word in a sentence or seeing the first letter. Hints are designed to support learning, not punish curiosity. However, if any hint is used on a word, that word's score is reduced by half a point to encourage independent recall over time. This small scoring adjustment helps parents see which words their student can spell confidently versus which ones still need support.
